How Much Do I Need to Retire?
The answer is personal — but with the right modelling, you can get to a number that is both realistic and achievable.
Your Situation
If you are trying to work out how much your pension and savings need to be worth before you can retire…
The question of how much you need to retire is one of the most searched financial questions online — and one of the least satisfyingly answered, because the honest answer is that it depends entirely on you. It depends on when you want to retire, what income you want to live on, whether you have a partner, whether you own your home, how long you expect to live, and what you want to leave behind. A generic calculator cannot give you a reliable answer.
At Castle Stonebridge, we build personalised retirement cashflow models for clients across the UK. We map your current assets, projected savings, and anticipated income sources — pension, State Pension, ISA, investment — against a clear income target, then show you whether you are on track and what needs to change if you are not. It is one of the most valuable exercises we undertake with clients.
Questions We Answer
"What income do I actually need to retire comfortably?"
Your income target is the starting point for all retirement planning — and it should reflect your actual lifestyle, not a generic figure.
"Am I on track to retire when I want to, with the assets I have?"
A cashflow model tells you whether current savings rates and investment returns will deliver your retirement target.
"How does the State Pension factor into my retirement income?"
The full new State Pension (£11,502 in 2024/25) meaningfully reduces the private pension pot you need — understanding when you will receive it is important.
"What is the "25x" rule for retirement savings, and does it apply to me?"
The 25x rule is a useful benchmark — but it does not account for UK tax, the State Pension, or the sequencing of different income sources.
"What if I have not saved enough — what can I do now to improve my position?"
Even relatively small changes to savings rate, retirement age, or spending target can dramatically improve retirement outcomes.
Our Approach
How We Guide You
Retirement income targeting
We work with you to establish a realistic retirement income target, accounting for your lifestyle, location, partner, mortgage status, and aspirations.
Cashflow modelling
We build a personalised cashflow model projecting your assets, income sources, and spending from now through to the end of your retirement.
Gap analysis and action plan
We identify any shortfall between your trajectory and your target, and propose specific, prioritised actions to close the gap.
Progress reviews
We review your retirement plan at least annually, updating projections for market performance, legislative changes, and evolving personal circumstances.
Key Considerations
What you should know before making a decision
- The PLSA's 2024 Retirement Living Standards estimate a comfortable retirement requires approximately £37,300 per year for a single person and £54,500 for a couple — but these are national benchmarks, not personal targets.
- The State Pension (£11,502 in 2024/25 for the full new State Pension) reduces the private wealth you need to accumulate. You can check your State Pension forecast at gov.uk/check-state-pension.
- Inflation significantly affects retirement planning over long periods. A 3% inflation rate would require your retirement income to be approximately 34% higher in ten years to maintain the same purchasing power.
- Investment returns are not guaranteed. Any retirement projection based on investment growth should be stress-tested against adverse scenarios and reviewed regularly.
