Investing for Grandchildren
Starting early, investing regularly, and choosing the right structure can give your grandchildren a meaningful financial head start.
Your Situation
If you want to set aside money for your grandchildren's future but are not sure how to do it effectively…
Many grandparents want to contribute financially to their grandchildren's future — for education, a first property, a business start, or simply a strong financial foundation. The challenge is choosing the right vehicle: one that grows the money effectively, keeps it accessible when needed, does not create unnecessary tax complications, and ideally gives the grandchild a genuine financial education along the way.
Castle Stonebridge helps grandparents across the UK structure investments for the next generation in a way that is tax-efficient, appropriate for the intended use, and practically manageable. We consider the full range of options — Junior ISAs, bare trusts, NS&I products, and regular gifting strategies — and help you identify the best structure for your family's specific circumstances.
Questions We Answer
"What is the best way to invest money for my grandchildren?"
The right vehicle depends on when the money is needed, who controls it, and the tax position of grandparents and grandchildren.
"Can I open a Junior ISA for my grandchild?"
Junior ISAs can only be opened by parents or guardians — but grandparents can contribute to an existing JISA up to the annual limit.
"How much can I give my grandchildren without paying inheritance tax?"
Gifting strategies from grandparents can reduce an estate and pass wealth while the grandchildren actually need it.
"Should I use a trust to control how and when grandchildren access the money?"
A bare trust or discretionary trust can provide more control over access than an ISA, which grandchildren can access freely from age 18.
"How does compound growth work and why does starting early matter so much?"
A small monthly investment from birth can grow substantially over 18 years — understanding the maths helps set appropriate contribution levels.
Our Approach
How We Guide You
Goal and structure review
We discuss what the investment is for, when access is needed, and who should control it — to identify the most appropriate vehicle or combination.
Tax and gifting analysis
We review your IHT position and identify how investing for grandchildren can be structured to reduce your own estate tax-efficiently.
Investment selection and setup
We select the appropriate account or trust structure and investment strategy, matched to the time horizon and intended purpose of the funds.
Regular review and top-up planning
We review the investment annually and help you plan birthday, Christmas, or milestone top-up contributions in a tax-efficient way.
Key Considerations
What you should know before making a decision
- The Junior ISA annual allowance is £9,000 per child (2024/25). Money in a Junior ISA cannot be accessed until the child turns 18, at which point it converts to an adult ISA under the child's control.
- Gifts to grandchildren from income (rather than capital) can qualify as "normal expenditure out of income" — an unlimited IHT exemption if the gifts are regular and do not affect your standard of living.
- Money held in a bare trust for a grandchild is legally the grandchild's money — it cannot be taken back by grandparents if circumstances change. Legal and tax advice should be obtained before establishing a trust.
- The value of investments held for grandchildren may fall as well as rise. Long time horizons (10–18 years) reduce but do not eliminate investment risk. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances.
