Retirement Planning for Couples
Retiring together means planning together — aligning two financial lives into a coherent, tax-efficient income strategy.
Your Situation
If you and your partner are approaching retirement and want to plan your finances together…
Retirement planning for couples involves an additional layer of complexity compared to planning for an individual — but it also offers significant opportunities. Two sets of pensions, two State Pension entitlements, two tax allowances, and two lifetimes of financial history can be combined into a far more tax-efficient and resilient retirement income plan than either partner could achieve alone.
Castle Stonebridge advises couples across the UK on how to structure their retirement together. We identify opportunities to equalise income between partners to make best use of both personal allowances, review survivor provisions on pensions and annuities, model the financial impact of one partner dying significantly before the other, and ensure that both partners understand and are involved in the financial plan.
Questions We Answer
"Should we equalise our pension incomes to reduce our combined tax bill?"
If one partner has a much higher income, using the other's personal allowance efficiently can save significant tax each year.
"What happens to our finances if one of us dies first?"
Survivor income — from pensions, investments, and State Pension — needs to be modelled for both scenarios.
"Do we both have a full State Pension entitlement, and what if one partner does not?"
State Pension gaps can be filled by making voluntary NI contributions — but this needs to be identified and acted on before retirement.
"Should we buy a joint-life annuity or use drawdown for flexibility?"
The right income structure depends on your ages, health, risk tolerance, and the relative importance of security vs flexibility.
"How do we plan for potential care costs in later life?"
The cost of care for one or both partners can significantly affect the other's finances — this needs to be modelled and planned for.
Our Approach
How We Guide You
Joint financial fact-find
We review both partners' pensions, savings, State Pension positions, income sources, and future plans together to build a complete joint picture.
Retirement income modelling
We model your combined income across all sources for both retirement phases — together and, importantly, what happens if one of you dies first.
Income equalisation strategy
Where appropriate, we identify opportunities to equalise income between partners to maximise use of both personal allowances and lower rate tax bands.
Survivor and estate planning
We review survivor provisions on all pensions and investments, and ensure that pension death nominations, wills, and powers of attorney are in place.
Key Considerations
What you should know before making a decision
- Both partners have a personal allowance of £12,570 per year (2024/25). Structuring retirement income so both allowances are fully used is a key tax-saving strategy for couples.
- Survivor income from pensions varies significantly by scheme type. DB pension survivor benefits and annuity joint-life provisions need to be reviewed — one partner's income could fall significantly on the other's death.
- Both partners' State Pension entitlements should be checked. If one partner has gaps in their NI record, voluntary contributions (currently £824.20 per year for Class 3 contributions in 2024/25) can significantly increase State Pension income.
- Inheritance tax planning for couples benefits from careful use of both nil rate bands (£325,000 each) and the residence nil rate band (£175,000 each), giving a combined potential allowance of up to £1 million.
