Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you have recently had a baby or are expecting one and want to get your finances in order…

Having a child is one of the most significant financial events in adult life — not because of the immediate costs (though those are real) but because it fundamentally changes your financial responsibilities. Suddenly, you have a person who depends on you financially for at least 18 years, and potentially much longer. That changes your protection needs, your savings priorities, and your thinking about what you want to leave behind.

Castle Stonebridge helps new parents across the UK get their financial plan right from the start. We address the most pressing needs first — life insurance to protect your family, income protection to maintain the mortgage and bills if you cannot work — and then look at the longer-term opportunity: starting a Junior ISA early and using the power of compound growth to give your child a meaningful financial foundation.

Questions We Answer

"Do I have enough life insurance to protect my family if I die?"

A child creates a new financial dependency — your life insurance needs should be reassessed immediately.

"What happens to my family financially if I am too ill to work for a year or more?"

Income protection is the most underrated protection product — most families could not sustain their lifestyle without it.

"Do I have an up-to-date will that names guardians for my child?"

Without a will, the courts decide who raises your child — and your assets may not pass as you intend.

"Should I start a Junior ISA for my baby, and how much should I put in?"

Starting early maximises the power of compound growth — even a small monthly contribution from birth becomes significant by age 18.

"How does having a child affect my pension contributions and retirement planning?"

Maternity or paternity leave, childcare costs, and potential career changes all affect pension saving — understanding the impact helps you adapt.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

Protection needs assessment

We review your current life insurance, critical illness, and income protection cover and identify any gaps created by the new arrival.

02

Will and legal documents review

We highlight the importance of an up-to-date will (with named guardians) and Lasting Powers of Attorney, and refer you to a trusted solicitor.

03

Junior ISA setup and strategy

We help you open and invest a Junior ISA with an appropriate long-term investment strategy for an 18-year time horizon.

04

Revised financial plan

We update your overall financial plan to reflect reduced income during parental leave, increased outgoings, and new long-term priorities.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • Life insurance is essential for parents with young children. Term assurance provides a lump sum if you die within the policy term — it should be sufficient to repay the mortgage and provide income for your family until the youngest child is financially independent.
  • Income protection insurance pays a tax-free monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. For most families with a mortgage and young children, this is a higher priority than many people appreciate.
  • The Junior ISA annual allowance is £9,000 per child (2024/25). Money invested at birth at a 5% annual return could grow to approximately £250,000 by age 30 with regular contributions — compound growth over long periods is significant.
  • A will with named guardians is the most important legal document for new parents. Without a will, the courts decide who raises your child if both parents die. This should be a priority within weeks of the birth, not months.
