Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you have a significant sum of money to invest and are not sure where to start…

Receiving or accumulating a substantial lump sum — from a property sale, inheritance, pension lump sum, business sale, or savings — creates a real decision point. The options are numerous: ISA, pension, general investment account, structured products, property, cash. The right answer depends on your tax position, time horizon, risk tolerance, existing wealth, and what the money is for — and getting it wrong can be costly in terms of both tax and returns.

Castle Stonebridge helps clients across the UK make structured, evidence-based decisions about lump sum investment. We assess the full picture — not just the money in front of you, but your entire financial position — before recommending a portfolio strategy. We also address the practical question of timing: whether to invest immediately or phase the investment to reduce market timing risk.

Questions We Answer

"Should I invest the whole sum at once or phase it in over time?"

Phasing (pound-cost averaging) reduces timing risk but can underperform immediate lump-sum investment in rising markets — the right approach depends on your risk tolerance.

"Which investment wrapper is most tax-efficient for my circumstances — ISA, pension, or GIA?"

The right wrapper depends on your tax position, access needs, and whether you want to pass the money on — the choice has long-term implications.

"How should the money be invested — what funds and asset classes?"

Asset allocation drives the vast majority of long-term investment returns — getting the right diversified mix is more important than fund selection.

"What is my attitude to risk and how should that shape my investment portfolio?"

Risk tolerance is personal and must be matched to an appropriate portfolio — investing too cautiously or too aggressively both lead to poor outcomes.

"How do I avoid paying unnecessary tax on investment returns?"

ISA allowances, capital gains tax annual exempt amount, and dividend allowances must all be considered in the investment structure.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

Goal and circumstance review

We establish what the money is for, when you need it, your tax position, and how the lump sum fits into your overall financial plan.

02

Risk profiling

We assess your attitude to risk, capacity for loss, and investment experience to identify an appropriate risk profile for the investment.

03

Wrapper and portfolio construction

We recommend the optimal tax wrapper (ISA, pension, GIA, or combination) and construct a diversified portfolio appropriate for your risk profile and objectives.

04

Ongoing investment management

We monitor and rebalance the portfolio periodically, and review the overall strategy at least annually in light of performance and changing circumstances.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • The value of investments may fall as well as rise, and you may receive back less than you invest. Investing a lump sum carries market risk that must be understood and accepted before proceeding.
  • The ISA annual allowance is £20,000 per person (2024/25). Maximising ISA contributions before investing in a general investment account is generally tax-efficient for most investors.
  • For higher and additional rate taxpayers, pension contributions offer significant tax relief — a £10,000 pension contribution costs a higher-rate taxpayer only £6,000 after 40% tax relief.
  • Diversification across asset classes (equities, bonds, property, alternatives) and geographies reduces concentration risk. Investing a large sum in a single asset or sector is generally not appropriate without specific reasons.
