Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you have recently inherited money or assets and are deciding what to do next…

Inheriting a significant sum of money often arrives at an emotionally difficult time — alongside the loss of someone important to you. The combination of grief and financial decision-making is not a conducive one, and many people make hasty or suboptimal choices under time pressure they often do not actually face. The most important first piece of advice about an inheritance is: do not rush. Cash held sensibly for six to twelve months whilst you get your bearings is not a financial mistake.

When you are ready, Castle Stonebridge can help you invest your inheritance in a way that reflects both the practical financial opportunity and the personal significance of the money. We work with clients across the UK to assess the full picture — your existing financial plan, tax position, income needs, and long-term goals — before recommending an investment strategy that is right for you, not a generic template.

Questions We Answer

"Do I need to do anything with the inheritance immediately?"

Understanding your timelines removes pressure — most inherited money can sit safely in cash while you take time to decide.

"Are there any tax implications I need to deal with on the inherited assets?"

Inherited assets may carry embedded capital gains or income tax obligations that need to be understood before investment decisions are made.

"How should I integrate this inheritance into my overall financial plan?"

An inheritance rarely sits in isolation — understanding how it fits with your existing pensions, savings, and goals shapes the investment decision.

"Should I pay off debt, invest, or do both?"

The decision between debt repayment and investment depends on interest rates, returns, and your personal attitude to being debt-free.

"How do I ensure the inherited money is invested in a way that honours the person I received it from?"

Many people find it helpful to invest an inheritance in a way that aligns with what the person would have wanted, or that funds a meaningful goal.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

No-rush initial conversation

We begin with a conversation about your overall situation — no pressure, no immediate recommendations — just listening and understanding.

02

Tax and legal position review

We identify any immediate tax obligations (capital gains on inherited shares, income tax on inherited property income) and deal with those first.

03

Investment plan design

Once you are ready, we build a personalised investment plan that integrates the inheritance into your broader financial goals.

04

Implementation and ongoing care

We implement the agreed strategy, then provide ongoing reviews to ensure the plan remains on track and appropriate as your life evolves.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • Inherited shares or investment funds carry the acquisition cost at the date of death (the "probate value") — any growth from that point may be subject to capital gains tax if sold outside an ISA or pension wrapper.
  • Inherited pension pots are subject to specific rules depending on when the original pension holder died. From April 2027, inherited pensions will also be brought within the scope of inheritance tax — taking advice on what you have inherited is important.
  • The value of any invested assets may fall as well as rise. There is no obligation to invest — maintaining cash or low-risk savings is a valid and sometimes appropriate choice.
  • If the inheritance is substantial, inheritance tax planning for your own estate should also be considered — particularly if the inherited money takes your estate above the IHT nil rate band threshold.
