Understanding Your Cover
What is income protection insurance?
Income protection replaces a portion of your earnings if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Unlike critical illness cover, it pays out for any condition — physical or mental — that prevents you from doing your job.
Pays for any illness or injury
From a broken wrist to a serious mental health condition, income protection covers any medical reason that prevents you from doing your own job — there is no restrictive list of qualifying conditions.
Pays until you recover — or retire
Unlike statutory sick pay (which stops after 28 weeks) or employer sick pay, income protection can continue paying until you return to work or reach your chosen retirement age — up to age 65 or 70.
Tax-free monthly income
Benefits from a personal income protection policy are paid free of income tax and National Insurance, meaning what you receive each month is yours to spend on your mortgage, bills, and family.
Coverage
What conditions are covered?
Income protection with an own-occupation definition pays out if you cannot do your specific job — not just any job. This makes it the most comprehensive form of income replacement available.
Mental health conditions (stress, anxiety, depression)
Musculoskeletal problems (back pain, repetitive strain)
Cardiovascular conditions (heart attack, stroke)
Cancer and serious illness
Accidents, fractures, and surgical recovery
Neurological conditions (MS, Parkinson's)
Long Covid and post-viral fatigue

Common Questions
What is income protection insurance?
Income protection insurance pays a monthly tax-free benefit if you're unable to work due to illness, injury, or accident. It replaces a portion of your lost earnings — usually up to 60% of your pre-tax income — for as long as you remain unable to work, up to the end of the policy term.
How is the premium calculated?
Premiums are based on your age, occupation class, smoker status, the amount of monthly benefit required, the deferred period (how long before payments start), and the policy term. Younger, healthier applicants in lower-risk occupations typically pay lower premiums. Final premiums are subject to full medical underwriting.
What is a 'deferred period'?
The deferred period is the waiting time after you stop working before your policy starts paying out. This tool offers a 1-month or 2-month deferred period. A shorter deferred period (1 month) means the insurer starts paying sooner, which increases your premium because more short-term illness and injury claims will reach the payout threshold. Choosing a 2-month deferred period reduces your premium, and is often suitable if your employer pays sick pay for the first month.
What does 'own occupation' definition mean?
Own occupation is the most comprehensive definition of incapacity. You are covered if you cannot perform the specific duties of your own job — not just any work. This is distinct from 'any occupation' or 'activities of daily living' definitions, which set a much higher bar to claim.
Is the indicative quote guaranteed?
No. This tool provides a guide to potential premium ranges based on the information you provide. Your actual premium will be confirmed following a full fact-find, assessment of your health history, and medical underwriting by the insurer. Premiums and terms may differ from those shown here.
Are income protection premiums tax-deductible?
For personal policies, premiums are paid from post-tax income but the benefit is paid tax-free. For executive income protection arranged through a limited company, premiums are generally an allowable business expense, but the benefit is treated as income. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances.

Risk Warning: Income protection insurance involves ongoing premium payments. Failure to keep up with premium payments may result in the policy lapsing and cover ceasing. Premiums are not guaranteed to remain fixed unless specified in your policy documents.
Indicative Quotes Disclaimer: All figures generated by this tool are for illustrative purposes only. They are based on simplified assumptions including a 3-month deferred period, an own-occupation definition of incapacity, and a benefit term to age 65. Final premiums are subject to full disclosure of health and lifestyle information and medical underwriting by the insurer. Pre-existing medical conditions may result in exclusions, premium loadings, or refusal of cover.
