Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you are a teacher trying to understand what your pension is actually worth…

The Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) is a valuable defined benefit pension — but many teachers underestimate what they have built up, or make retirement decisions without fully understanding the options available to them. Teachers with service spanning the legacy final salary section and the newer career average (CARE) section need to understand how their blended benefits interact, and what the impact of retiring early or working part-time has on their income.

Castle Stonebridge provides independent financial advice to teachers and education professionals across the UK. We help you model your projected retirement income, understand the cost of early retirement actuarial reductions, assess the AVC and lump sum options, and build a plan for the retirement you want — without the guesswork.

Questions We Answer

"How much will I get from my Teachers' Pension when I retire?"

Understanding your projected income is the starting point for all retirement planning.

"What is the actuarial reduction if I retire before my normal pension age?"

Early retirement from the TPS permanently reduces your pension — the size of that reduction is critical to your decision.

"Should I take the maximum lump sum or a higher pension income?"

This is an irreversible commutation decision with long-term income implications that needs modelling across your retirement.

"Would an AVC help me top up my retirement income tax-efficiently?"

A TPS AVC can be used to fund tax-free cash, potentially making your pension income go further in retirement.

"What happens to my pension if I go part-time or take a career break?"

Part-time and career-break periods reduce pensionable pay and service — understanding the impact helps you plan accordingly.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

Pension statement analysis

We review your TPS annual benefit statement, modelling projected income under different retirement ages and commutation options.

02

Retirement income planning

We build a clear income plan for retirement, integrating your TPS benefits with State Pension, savings, ISAs, and any other pensions.

03

AVC and contribution review

We assess whether an AVC or personal pension contribution strategy would materially improve your position ahead of retirement.

04

Decision support at retirement

When you are approaching retirement, we provide advice on lump sum commutation, phased retirement, and State Pension deferral.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • The Teachers' Pension Scheme has a normal pension age of 65 for post-2007 members. Retiring before this triggers actuarial reductions that permanently reduce your annual pension.
  • Since April 2022, all TPS members accrue benefits under the 2015 career average section. Legacy final salary benefits (for service before April 2022) are retained under the McCloud remedy.
  • TPS benefits are index-linked to CPI in payment — this built-in inflation protection is a significant advantage over most personal pensions and should be factored into any comparison.
  • The value of any AVC or personal pension fund is subject to investment risk. Tax relief on contributions depends on individual circumstances and current legislation, which is subject to change.
