Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you are dealing with the financial implications of losing someone close to you…

The last thing most people want to think about after bereavement is money. But financial decisions — about pensions, investments, property, and estate administration — do eventually need to be made, and they are better made thoughtfully than under pressure. At Castle Stonebridge, we have helped many clients across the UK navigate the financial aspects of bereavement with care and without urgency.

Our role is not to rush you into decisions, but to help you understand what you have inherited, what time-sensitive actions genuinely need to be taken, and what can wait until you are ready. We work at your pace, in plain English, and always with your long-term interests at the centre of everything we recommend.

Questions We Answer

"What financial tasks actually need to be done urgently after a death?"

Most financial decisions can wait — knowing what genuinely is time-sensitive removes unnecessary pressure.

"What happens to a pension when someone dies, and what have I inherited?"

Inherited pensions have specific rules about how and when they can be accessed, and significant tax implications to understand.

"What do I do with the investments, savings, and property I have inherited?"

Understanding what you have inherited — and its tax implications — is the essential starting point before making any investment decisions.

"How is the estate administered and what is the probate process?"

Probate can take many months — understanding the timeline helps you plan for when assets will actually become accessible.

"How do I restructure my own finances now that my circumstances have changed?"

Bereavement often changes income, housing, and financial needs significantly — a revised financial plan helps you adapt with confidence.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

Compassionate initial conversation

We listen first. We help you understand what you have, what genuinely needs attention, and what can wait — at your pace, with no pressure.

02

Inherited assets review

We identify what has been inherited — pensions, investments, property, savings — and explain the tax and practical implications of each.

03

Financial position reassessment

We help you understand your new financial position — income, assets, outgoings — and identify any adjustments needed to your own plan.

04

Informed decision-making

When you are ready, we help you make clear, evidence-based decisions about what to do with inherited assets — without pressure and without rushing.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • Most financial decisions following a bereavement can genuinely wait. Cash held in savings accounts while you take the time to grieve and plan carefully is not a mistake — it is prudent.
  • Inherited pensions from someone who died before age 75 can typically be passed to beneficiaries free of income tax. After age 75, withdrawals are taxed at the beneficiary's marginal rate. From April 2027, inherited pensions will also be brought within the scope of inheritance tax.
  • Probate — the legal process of administering an estate — typically takes between 6 and 12 months, sometimes longer for complex estates. Financial assets generally cannot be accessed until probate is granted.
  • Bereavement can significantly change your own financial situation — income may fall (if a partner's pension or salary is lost), housing needs may change, and your own estate planning should be reviewed.
