Advice Tailored to Your Situation

Your Situation

If you have recently inherited money, property, or other assets and want to handle them wisely…

Inheriting money or assets is one of the most common prompts for people to seek financial advice for the first time. The reasons are practical — what do I do with this money, are there tax implications, should I invest it? — but they are also emotional: many people feel a sense of responsibility to honour the person they inherited from, and want to make decisions they can be proud of.

Castle Stonebridge advises individuals across the UK on how to handle inherited assets thoughtfully. We help you understand what you have actually received, identify any immediate tax obligations, and develop a plan that integrates the inheritance into your broader financial life — in a way that makes sense for your goals, not just the assets you have inherited.

Questions We Answer

"Do I need to pay any tax on what I have inherited?"

Inherited assets may have capital gains tax embedded in them — understanding the tax position before selling or reinvesting is important.

"What should I do with inherited shares or investment funds?"

Inherited investment portfolios may not be appropriate for your own goals or risk tolerance and may need restructuring.

"What happens if I have inherited a pension pot?"

Inherited pensions have complex rules about access, taxation, and from April 2027, inheritance tax — taking advice is essential.

"Is there a time limit within which I need to make decisions about the inheritance?"

Most financial decisions can wait, but some (like decisions about inherited pensions or CGT on inherited assets) do have relevant deadlines.

"How does the inheritance affect my own estate and IHT position?"

A significant inheritance can take your own estate above the IHT threshold — triggering a need for your own estate planning.

Our Approach

How We Guide You

01

Inherited assets review

We identify and assess everything you have inherited — cash, investments, property, pensions — and explain the tax treatment of each.

02

Tax position analysis

We identify any immediate capital gains tax obligations, income tax on inherited income-generating assets, and the implications of inheriting pension funds.

03

Integration into your financial plan

We assess how the inheritance fits into your existing financial situation and goals, and recommend how each asset should be treated.

04

Investment and estate planning

Where appropriate, we help you invest the inherited assets and consider whether the inheritance triggers a need for your own IHT planning.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • Inherited assets are revalued at the date of death (the "probate value"). Capital gains tax on any subsequent growth is assessed from this value, not the original acquisition cost — which may be significantly lower.
  • Inherited pension funds must be nominated by the deceased's pension trustees or administrators. If the deceased died before age 75, withdrawals are typically tax-free. After age 75, they are taxed as income. From April 2027, inherited pensions will also be subject to IHT.
  • A significant inheritance can take your own estate above the IHT nil rate band, creating a new IHT liability that did not previously exist. Estate planning for yourself should be reviewed promptly after a substantial inheritance.
  • The value of any inherited investments may fall as well as rise. There is no obligation to retain inherited assets in their original form, but decisions about disposal should be made with full understanding of tax implications.
