Your Situation

If you have one or more small pension pots and are not sure what to do with them…

Millions of people in the UK have small pension pots accumulated from short-term jobs or auto-enrolment schemes — often worth a few hundred to a few thousand pounds each. These pots are often forgotten, poorly invested, and eating away at their value through annual charges. Understanding the rules around small pots, and what your options are, could make a meaningful difference to your retirement income.

At Castle Stonebridge, we regularly help clients across the UK assess their small pension pots alongside their broader retirement planning. The rules around small pots — including the ability to take up to three small pots as a lump sum from personal pensions — are less well known than they should be, and could give you useful flexibility at or before retirement.

Questions We Answer

"Can I cash in my small pension pots before retirement?"

The small pot rules allow up to three personal pension pots worth under £10,000 to be taken as a cash lump sum from age 55 (57 from 2028).

"Am I paying charges on old pension pots that are eroding their value?"

Annual management charges of 1% on a £2,000 pot cost £20 per year — small but meaningful over a decade of inactivity.

"Is it worth consolidating my small pots into my main pension?"

Consolidation can reduce charges and simplify administration, though some small pots may have features worth retaining.

"Will I owe tax if I take a small pension pot as a lump sum?"

Tax treatment depends on whether you use the small pot rules or flexible access — the distinction is important.

"What happens to my small pension pots when I die?"

Uncrystallised pension pots can typically be passed on tax-efficiently — worth understanding for estate planning purposes.

04

Simplification and implementation

Where appropriate, we manage transfers or help you implement a streamlined pension structure that's easier to manage going forward.

Key Considerations

What you should know before making a decision

  • Personal pension pots worth under £10,000 can be taken as cash lump sums (up to three pots) under the small pot rules — 25% is tax-free and 75% is taxed as income in the year of withdrawal.
  • Trivial commutation allows the total pension savings of someone aged 55 or over (57 from 2028) worth under £30,000 in total to be taken as a single lump sum — subject to qualifying conditions.
  • Some small pension pots may have guaranteed annuity rates or protected benefits that make them worth more than their headline value — these should be identified before any transfer or cash-in.
  • Taking pension funds before retirement reduces the amount available to fund your later years. The value of invested pension funds may fall as well as rise. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances.
